Loro Djonggrang was princess. She belonged to dynasty of the Sailendras who ruled over Sumatra and Java at one time. She was a most beautiful girl.
Her father King Baka was great warrior. He was a champion of many types of
martial arts. He also possessed certain super-human powres in that field and knew certain technics which nobody else knew. He ruled over a country in Java which was called Pako.

In Java, there was also another country called Penggirim. His wife Chandrawati was also a very great beauty. When Baka was young, he fell in love with her. But she did not
love him and married the ruler of Penggirim.

But Baka could never forget Chandrawati. He got married to another princess and begat Loro Djonggrang. His queen died and Baka showered all the maternal and paternal love upon the beautiful and charming Loro Djonggrang.
Chandrawati also gave birth to a son. He was named Bandung. The royal emblem was tatooed on his hip when he was very young. It was the custom.
            One day, he was kidnapped.
He was brought up by another great warrior who taught him every aspect of martial arts. He could raise the Kundalini energy and place it at any of the chakras and perform wonderful feats of warfare. There was a ring which Bandung was wearing when abducted. This ring was attached to a chain which Bandung wore around his neck.
When he reached a youthful age, there was a competition of martial arts in Pako. Baka was holding it in order to recruit a proper general for his army. Bandung passed all the tests and won in every competition.
He was made the general of Pako.
The very first order that Bandung received was to wage war against Penggirim and capture Chandrawati and bring her alive and unharmed to Baka without even a nail scratch.
Bandung captured Penggirim with ease. The king became his prisoner. Bandung ordered the king to be killed with arrows. Then he went to capture Chandrawati.
As soon as he entered Chandrawati's palace, she slashed out with her sword at Bandung.
Chandrawati herself was a warrior woman. She used to meditate and through her meditations, she had increased her power and prowess.
The sword cut though the armour of Bandung. The chain with is ring fell out.
When Chandrawati slashed out, her breast piece became untied and fell. Her breasts were exposed. At the sight of Bandung, her breasts twitched and became engorged. Milk squirted out.
The warrior queen immediately saw the ring and recognised Bandung as her own son.
She then showed Bandung all the insignias of her royalty.
Bandung was convinced that he was a prince of the royal house of Penggirim.
As soon as Bandung knew that he was the prince and Chandrawati was his own mother, he realised that he had condemned his own father to be killed by archers.
Immediately he ran to the spot. But then the archers had discharged their arrows. Bandung took a leap and flew threw the cloud of arrows and caught every one of them before any one could touch the king's body.
Thus he saved his father and fell at his feet.
The king called everyone and told them that there would be a garuda symbol tatooed at the left-side of the hip of Bandung.
It was there and everyone else fell on their knees and made their obeisance to their long-lost but newly-found prince.
He called together the army of Pako. He kept willing volunteers for Penggirim and sent back the others to Pako.
The king of Penggirim sent Bandung to go alone on a journey of discovery and learn many things.

One night, while Bandung was going along a jungle trail, he met a giant Rakshasa. He was surrounded by thousands of rakshasas. The rakshasa king had a tail. The power and life of the rakshasa was centred in the tail. The Rakshasa king challenged Bandung. Before the Rakshasa could realise what is happening, Bandung went behind him and caught his tail. He squeezed through between the legs of the rakshasa with his tail. He pulled hard.
The rakshasa yelled with pain and agony. Finally he surrendered to Bandung and became his slave. Then he took Bandung to his capital city

When Baka came to know that Bandung had betrayed him, he flew into a rage and pledged to Loro Djonggrang that he would take an army to  Penggirim, kill Bandung and carry off Chandrawati to Pako and make her his queen and fill the place of her mother with Chandrawati.

A fierce battle took place. Baka's army was losing.
So Baka stopped the war and challenged Bandung to a one-to-one duel.
Both of them fought. But Baka fought an illusory fight and Bandung was hurt badly and went into a coma.
Baka kicked his body around and sent it flying into a jungle where it fell.
Bandung's generals rescued his body and brought it to the army barracks where they gave treatment.

Chandrawati knew about this and immediately she came to barracks. She saw Bandung and by means of her own spiritual powers and the grace of her deities, she revived her son. She gave him the power to overcome Baka's supernatural powers.
She tod him that the life-centre of Baka was not within his body but in his shadow. She gave him a charmed kris dagger. She told him to stab with it at Baka's shadow when his body was not touching the ground.

Again the duel started. While it was taking place, Chandrawati came along on a horse to the battle-ground.
When Baka saw her, she smiled mockingly at him.
Upon this, Baka lost his cool. He wanted to finish off Bandung once and for all. So he leapt into the air and took aim at Bandung. While he was still in the air, Bandung stabbed at the neck part of his shadow with the magic kris.
            Baka immediately died.
Loro Djonggarang next came to fight a duel with Bandung.
            She also lost to him.

Bandung captured Loro Djonggrang and wanted to marry her.
Loro put out a condition to him.

Bandung captured Loro Djonggrang and wanted to marry her.
Loro put out a condition to him.
He must build one thousand temple within a night.
Bandung invoked the rakshasa king at night. He came with his army.
Bandung told him to build 1000 temples within the night. The rakshasas started building them.

When Loro came to know about this, she was terrified that she might lose the bet. But her nurse offered an idea.

All of them went to a place which was some distance to the east of the place where Bandung was building the temples. They asked thousands of people to bring straw and light fires.
Then they mimicked the cockerels and crowed like them all over the area.
The rakshasas saw the reddish glow in the east. They also heard cockerels crowing. They thought that the sun was rising. The rakshasas cannot stay around in day-light. They must come out only at night.
            Immediately all the rakshasas vanished.
The astonished Bandung looked at the temples and counted them.
            There were only 999 temples.
At that time, Loro Djonggarang came and looked at him mockingly.
The disappointed Bandung in a fit of remorse and anger cursed Loro Djonggrang to turn into stone.

She turned into stone and Bandung himself built her temple.
It stood as the 1000th temple.
